
The Shetland Sheepdog was originally bred to herd livestock in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, and many Shelties today still naturally possess strong herding instincts. Herding is an exciting activity that provides excellent mental stimulation, confidence building, and teamwork between dog and handler.
Whether you are completely new to herding or interested in exploring performance events, herding is a fun and rewarding way to connect with your dog while celebrating the breed’s heritage.

The club regularly works with Chinook Dog Centre for Herding Instinct Tests and training opportunities.
Chinook Dog Centre is owned and operated by Brandy-Lee Fazlic, an experienced dog sport competitor and trainer who focuses on positive, fun-based learning for both dogs and handlers.
Herding Instinct Tests are a wonderful introduction for young dogs to safely evaluate natural instinct and interest in livestock. Full herding training is generally recommended once dogs are physically mature to help protect developing joints and growing bodies.

No previous herding experience is needed to get started. Many owners begin simply by attending an instinct test to see how their Sheltie responds to livestock.
