Sheltie Grooming And Care

The Shetland Sheepdog is a double-coated breed known for its beautiful, full coat and expressive appearance. Regular grooming and routine care are important not only for maintaining that appearance, but also for supporting overall health and comfort.

Understanding the Sheltie Coat

Shelties have a double coat, made up of:

  • Outer coat – long, straight, and weather-resistant
  • Undercoat – soft, dense, and insulating

This combination helps protect the dog in various weather conditions, but it also requires consistent maintenance to prevent matting and excessive shedding. All of our puppies are raised in our home with love and care. They are exposed to different sounds and experiences to help them develop into confident and well-socialized puppies. We provide all necessary vaccinations and deworming before sending them to their new homes.

Brushing & Coat Maintenance

Regular brushing is essential for keeping a Sheltie’s coat healthy.

  • Brush 2–3 times per week under normal conditions
  • During seasonal shedding (“blowing coat”), more frequent brushing may be needed
  • Focus on areas prone to matting:
    • Behind the ears
    • Under the front legs
    • Pants (hindquarters)
    • Around the collar area

Using proper tools such as a pin brush, slicker brush, and undercoat rake can help maintain the coat without damaging it.

Remember to spray the coat BEFORE brushing and while you brush to avoid damaging the coat.

Brushing should be done "line by line" * we will work at posting some videos that can show you how to do this!

VIDEOS

Bathing

  • Typically done every 4–8 weeks, or as needed
  • Use a dog-specific shampoo and conditioner to maintain coat health
  • Thorough rinsing and drying are important, especially for the dense undercoat

A clean coat is easier to brush and less prone to matting.

Nail Care

Regular nail trimming is an important part of routine care.

  • Nails should be trimmed every 3–4 weeks, or as needed
  • Overgrown nails can affect movement and comfort

For dogs sensitive to trimming, gradual introduction and positive reinforcement can help build tolerance.

Ear Care

  • Check ears regularly for dirt, wax buildup, or irritation
  • Clean as needed using a vet-recommended ear cleaner
  • Keep an eye on excessive redness or odor, which may indicate infection

Dental Care

Oral health is often overlooked but is an important part of overall care.

  • Regular brushing with dog-safe toothpaste is recommended
  • Dental chews or veterinary cleanings may also be part of a care routine

Shedding & Seasonal Changes

Shelties typically experience heavier shedding once or twice a year.

During these periods:

  • Increase brushing frequency
  • Remove loose undercoat to prevent matting
  • Regular grooming helps keep the dog comfortable and reduces loose hair in the home

Exercise & Mental Stimulation

In addition to grooming, Shelties benefit from regular physical and mental activity.

  • Daily walks and playtime
  • Participation in activities such as agility, obedience, rally, or scent work
  • Mental enrichment through training and interactive games

Shelties are intelligent and active dogs that thrive when both body and mind are engaged.

Routine Veterinary Care

Ongoing veterinary care supports long-term health and well-being.

  • Regular check-ups
  • Vaccinations as recommended
  • Preventative care (parasite control, etc.)

A Lifelong Routine

Grooming and care are not occasional tasks—they are part of a consistent routine that supports the health, comfort, and quality of life of the Shetland Sheepdog.

With regular maintenance and attention, Shelties are a rewarding breed to care for and live with.
